Congratulations and thank you to all that helped support the efforts to inspire North Carolina’s elected officials in Raleigh to finally support and pass a homestead tax exemption for the 100% permanent and total Disabled Veterans of our state. The 2009 exemption is for the first $45,000 tax value of your homestead. This is a start but falls far short of an adequate tax relief for the Veterans who have sacrificed so much for our state and nation. Please see your county tax office or your veteran service officer to receive VA certification needed to file for the exemption. But from Paul Lueke D-Durham and head of the Finance Committee came this response “I consulted with our House Finance Committee staff. This bill would take a significant amount of dollars from the General Fund. It is my conclusion that, in its present form, the bill is too expensive. Perhaps you and other supporters of HB 486 could consider, for the 2008 short session, another version of the bill that would be less costly than the current bill. We as North Carolina’s Disabled Veterans spend hundreds of millions of disability benefits dollars in counties across this state therefore it would only seem fair that the expense of a homestead tax exemption for Veterans should be split equally 50% from the state budget and 50% absorbed from the counties budget where the Vets live and spend that benefit money with local businesses which help to support the counties. As we have said before, “if it’s good enough for Oklahoma and New Mexico, it’s good enough for North Carolina.” The officials in North Carolina give good lip service to our state’s Veterans but are falling short in action. North Carolina General Statute Chapter 127C: Advisory Commission on Military Affairs. 127C-4 Purposes. “working to be viewed by national military leaders as the most military-friendly State in the nation.” If North Carolina wants the rest of the country to see us "as the most military-friendly State in the nation"
I and others say, “Put your money or in this case, our money where your mouth is and take care of your states Disabled Veterans!!!!
And Please don't say we are having money problems when in Mecklenburg Co. alone the county commissioners are about to spend 5 Million tax payers dollars to prop up a failing white water park not to mention the major cost over runs of the NASCAR hall of fame and the Links rail line. Listen folks I know the money is tight right now but the help Disabled Veterans needed has been known for years and bill after bill has been held up in the states finance committee and not allowed to come up before the house and senate for a vote. I am sorry but when are we going to get our priorities in order and now is as good a time as any.The state of North Carolina should be embarrassed to count Disabled Veterans benefit money as income when the implied intention of Congress was to award this money as compensation for damages and loss in the service to this country! This is no more than a tort compensation to right a wrong in a civil court case!! North Carolinas Disabled Veterans demand a Revised Homestead Tax Exemption!
New Disabled Veterans Bill Revised to include:
1. For North Carolina Disabled Veterans rated at 100% by the VA a homestead tax exemption that will be for the full fair cash value. 2. The exemption applies to the surviving spouse of the Veteran. 3. All sales taxes, including city and county sales tax, will be exempt w/ a Sales Tax Exemption Card. 4. Issued one auto license plate of the Veteran’s choice. 5. Issued a lifetime statewide hunting and fishing license. 6. Statewide admission to any Federal or State park, campground, or museum. 7. Every Disabled Veteran will have a homestead tax exemption based on the percentage of disability rating by the veteran’s administration. 8. Governor Bev Purdue statement.
Dear Mr. Kitchen, I received word that you would like a statement from Bev Perdue on her stance on the homestead exemption for disabled veterans. I’ve copied it into the email below: “As Governor, Bev will work to secure a homestead tax exemption for our disabled veterans. She has been a strong and consistent supporter of the military and our veterans. From her bold leadership in the state’s response to the Base Realignment and Closure process, successfully saving our bases and adding 50,000 new jobs to our state, to her creation of the Military Foundation to facilitate development of the defense, homeland security, and aerospace economic sectors, Perdue has always worked on the side of our military. To continue her vision of making North Carolina the most military friendly state in America, we must always be mindful of the needs of our active duty troops and our veterans. The people who have given so much for our country deserve to be treated with our upmost respect.” Respectfully, Meghan Brown (919)832-3660 Ext. 138 J. Kitchen and the rest of the states Disabled Veterans. kkcorb@gmail.com To ALL who read this: We ask for your help to spread the word about this web site and urge you to take action to let our state and local leaders know that the Disabled Veterans of North Carolina need and ask for their support. But we will not accept public lip service while they show no effort to make the necessary changes to improve the quality of life of ANY Disabled Veteran of this state and we will by any means let the general voting public know of that non-support!!
